Data protection and IT-security for reporters and activists

Despite the right to respect for one’s private life and correspondence (ECHR Art. 8)  as well as the fact that protection of sources is guaranteed by the constitution, personal data has become a product that is being purchased and sold. It is no longer just government and military agencies that can track your online activities, your contact network and your geographical location, but anyone who is willing to put down some time and resources. This is especially problematic for journalists and activists. What happens if you are a reporter and you happen to piss off the wrong person? What happens with the constitutional right to protection of sources?

This seminar touches upon the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, its strengths and weaknesses, as well as what methods that are being used to investigate and track the work of reporters and activists.
